P&D Time Parameter Checks (#76, October 2007)

Carriers that capture actual arrive and depart time for each P&D stop may utilize the Traffic/CIS to process and match the actual times back to the shipments, for both pickup and delivery.  The matched time will be the total actual time at the stop, for single-shipment stops, or an allocation of the actual stop time for pickups or deliveries of multiple shipments, as well as an allocation of the actual trip driving time.

As the quality of this data is dependent on each driver to either legibly record the times or note the arrival and departure in a data device, the Traffic/CIS routine to process this data includes a series of parameter checks to help insure that any invalid data is not used to calculate shipment profitability, defaulting in such cases to the performance data in the cost model.

The parameter checks are listed below.  <#> indicates that the parameter may be set by the CIS administrator.

1. Minutes in time is greater than 59 (Severe)
2. Hours in time is greater than 24 (Severe)
3. Stop time is one minute or less or Negative (Severe)
4. Stop time is greater than # hours (Warning)
5. Drive time is greater than # hours (Warning)
6. Pickup Weight is greater than # (Warning)
7. Weight is 0 (Severe)
8. Negative Drive time (Severe)
9. Negative Stem time (Severe)
10. Delivery Weight is greater than # lbs. (Warning)
11. No Time at Stop Calculated (Severe)
12. More than one Trailer Spot on Trip (Warning)
13. Stop time is greater than # hours (Severe)
14. Drive time is greater than # hours (Severe)
15. More than # shipments in one trip (Severe)
16. Leave Terminal Time missing (Severe)
17. Return to Terminal Time missing (Severe)
18. Number of Stops exceeds 50 (Severe)
19. No Miles found to the stop (Severe)
20. Overlapping Stops (Severe)
21. Miles from terminal to stop exceed 500 (Warning)
22. Total Weight exceeds # (Severe)
23. One-Way Stem exceeds all other driving (Severe)
24. Number of Stops exceeds 25 (Warning)
25. Lunch Time exceeds 60 minutes (Warning)

Stops with severe parameter errors are dropped, so that the shipment cost will default to the CIS performance data.  Drive times failing the severe parameter checks are also dropped, so that the shipment cost is based on the average experience for that ZIP Code / Postal Code.  Warning parameter errors are only displayed for information.

Carriers are encouraged to build any of these parameter checks into their own time entry and data capture systems to provide immediate feedback to help insure data accuracy.
