Drive Time Override (#28, Autumn 1999)

In a cost analysis, the Drive Adjust entry item allows the user to adjust the driving component of pickup or delivery with either an adjustment ratio (entries less than 5) or with the override to driving time (entries of 5 or more, which are used as override minutes).  An override to P&D driving time should be made in any situation where the P&D trip is different than that reflected in the CIS performance date, such as a dedicated run for a certain customer's deliveries or a late "clean-up" run for last-minute pickups.

When the pickup or delivery is a single stop trip, such as to load a truckload shipment or to spot a trailer, this override is straightforward: the round  trip driving minutes from the freight terminal to the customer can be entered for the Drive Adjust, and CIS will use it instead of any calculated time from the performance data in the cost calculation.

When an override to drive time is needed for costing freight on a P&D trip having multiple stops, the amount of time to enter is not as obvious, because the override must be an allocation of the total trip driving time to be applied to the one particular stop with freight to be costed.  Proper allocation requires the recognition of both stem and between stops driving time, and the CIS has an on-screen worksheet to develop this allocation.

To cost a particular shipment on such runs the following information is needed:

Stop Weight for the shipment being costed

Trip driving time (excluding time at stops)

Stem time (to first stop and from last stop)

Total weight picked up and delivered on the trip; or

Total stop time, based on the system configuration

Total number of stops

If the system is configured for paying P&D drivers by the mile, rather than by the hour, then trip driving miles and stem miles, rather than time, must be obtained.

This information can be for a specific trip or the average of a sample of trips.

On the CIS shipment entry screen, after the stop weight has been entered, double-click or press F7 on the Drive Adjust item, and the worksheet will appear.  Fill in the fields in the worksheet, then click OK, and the drive time override to be used for the particular stop's share of the trip will be calculated and written to the Drive Adjust item.  This window is also available on the Customer Profile Entry screen, after stop weight is entered.
