Empties In Both Directions (#39, Summer 2000)

Linehaul dispatch data processing develops headhaul and backhaul adjustment ratios using actual carrier linehaul dispatches.  While processing the data, legs with empties in one direction are “tagged” as backhaul.  Empties can be either actual or “effective.”  Effective empties are calculated from underutilized cube on LTL dispatches, and are included with actual empty dispatches.  If the leg has no actual empty dispatches, effective empties will be calculated if the effective empty “trigger,” specified in the processing settings, is met.

In situations where legs show empties moving in both directions, the processing logic either determines that one direction is headhaul and the other backhaul, or leaves both legs with no adjustment, but poor average load and cube in both directions.  The system makes this distinction based on the following criteria:

Criteria #1: Minor Empties and similar loading in both directions

If actual empties / LTL dispatches is less than 10% in both directions, and the ratio:

(difference in total empties) / (total empties)

is less than 0.25, then neither leg is considered backhaul nor headhaul.  Remaining Criteria is skipped.

Criteria #2: Overwhelming Actual Empties in one direction

If Actual Empties in the first direction are more than twice those in the opposite

direction, and the actual empties in the opposite direction exceed 5,

then the first direction is the Backhaul.

Remaining Criteria is skipped.

Criteria #3: Overwhelming LTL Dispatches in one direction

If opposite LTL dispatches exceed LTL dispatches by 50% or more,

then this direction is the Backhaul.

          Remaining Criteria is skipped.

Critera #4: Overwhelming Empties, Effective and Actual, in one direction

          If  the ratio:

(total empties) / (opposite direction total empties)

exceeds 1.5, then this direction is the Backhaul.

Each Leg is tested in both directions.  If none of the above criteria is met, then neither leg is considered headhaul nor backhaul.
