Faster Program Loading (#32, Winter 2000)
CIS user programs, by design, reside on the server when used in a LAN
environment, so that upgrades need only be loaded in one place. On
some networks, however, program loading takes considerably longer than
if the program were being accessed from the local C: drive. The
Transfer utility program, one of the CIS system maintenance routines,
can be configured on the user's local C: drive to set up and then
subsequently refresh all user software from the server, so that the
software can be loaded from the local drive.
This can be set up by following these steps at each
workstation:
- Copy the program TRANSFER.EXE from the server to the local C:CIS
home directory.
- Create the file RELOAD.COP with commands to copy all CIS
user software from the server to the local C: drive. Copy commands
use the syntax copy <space> from <space> to. Contact TCG
and we will e-mail you the boilerplate file. If the server has the
same drive designation for all users, then one RELOAD.COP file can be
created on the server, otherwise customing each user in their C:\CIS
subdirectory.
- Create a shortcut icon to run C:\CIS\TRANSFER.EXE
Titled "Refresh CIS Software".
- Click on the new icon to run TRANSFER. It will
display the message:
- No file found. Start one?
- Press Y, and reply to the prompts as follows:
- Number to Add: 1
- Title: Refresh CIS Software
- Command File: RELOAD.COP (precede with server path if on server)
Then, as prompted, press escape, and the copy commands from RELOAD.COP
will appear.
- At the prompt "press enter to execute commands,"
do so, and all CIS user software will be copied from the server to the
local drive. If necessary, press escape to exit.
- Modify all workstation CIS software icons by
right clicking on each and, under the subsequent Properties option,
changing the target to C:\CIS\ prior to each
program name.
Even though the software is now being loaded from the local C: drive, the
main server paths to the cost profile and all shipment files remain
unchanged. Any time the CIS software is updated in the future, the CIS
System Administrator should, after installing the upgraded on the server, advise
all workstation users to click their Refresh CIS Software icon to reload
the new files.
