Interline Coding Review (#33, Winter 2000)

The purpose of the Interline Profile for use with the Cost Information System is to contain cost adjustment data based on your method of handling freight with major connecting carriers. Cost data can be set up for each interline carrier at one or more terminals, separate for your pickup (receiving freight from an originating carrier) and delivery (giving freight to a terminating carrier).

The CIS can be set up to apply the interline profile by configuring the location code index with carrier SCAC codes (in lieu of P&D run numbers) for ZIP Code and Postal Code ranges where freight service is provided via interline. This configuration is done by processing a points list file with SCAC codes or by manually entering SCAC codes for specific ZIP code ranges via the CIS maintenance routines.

Guidelines for coding each connecting carrier in the Interline Profile are outlined below.

Interline Profile Coding Guide

METHOD OF INTERCHANGE

PROFILE INPUT

We pickup/deliver the shipment at connecting carrier’s dock.

For Stop Weight, enter the average weight interlined with this connecting carrier per trip. Also enter the average stop time, if known. Specific P&D run data can be set up in the system, with the run number entered in the profile as well.

The connecting carrier comes to our dock.

Enter zeros for the Drive and the Stop Adjustments to suppress P&D cost.

For Dock Handling: If the interline carrier performs the entire loading/unloading of their trailer at our dock, enter a 1; if the interline carrier assists, enter a 1.5; if we do the entire loading/unloading, retain the default 2.

We pickup and/or drop off a trailer at the connecting carriers’ yard.

Enter the appropriate Trailer Spot code and average stop weight interlined with this carrier. Enter the round-trip driving time between your terminal and the interline carrier’s terminal, if available. For Stop Time, enter average time for the hook and haul, if available. Enter the appropriate dock codes as outlined above.

The connecting carrier spots a trailer at our yard.

Enter zeros for P&D Drive and Stop Adjustments. Enter the appropriate dock codes as outlined above.
