Small Shipments on Pallets (#29, Autumn 1999)

When shipment data is being entered manually into the Cost Information System, entry of a small palletized shipment (low weight, high density) can trigger a warning message that each pallet has only a minimal height.  This is to help avoid errors in density or in pallet count.  However, if the shipment information is correct (such as a small motor on a pallet), it may still trigger a density adjustment when costed.

When a shipment is defined as unitized or palletized, and the density is specified, the Cost Information System performs a test to insure that the space occupied by the pallet itself is reflected in the linehaul cost allocation.  If the cube of each shipping unit (weight per pallet divided by density) falls below 7 cubic feet, therefore obviously not including the cube of the pallet itself, then the density is recalculated to add the cube of a standard size pallet.  This adjustment phases out as the shipment gets larger, up to 14 cubic feet, beyond which no adjustment is made.

If this calculation is made, the new calculated density is displayed in the shipment cost detail.  TRAFFIC/CIS makes this same adjustment, during the database costing, and the database viewer will display the calculated density.
