Entry of U.S. ZIP Codes and Canadian Postal Codes in lieu of terminal code/run number is an easy and efficient way to cost shipments using the Cost Information System.
The source of this data is the carrier points list file, which must contain ZIP / Postal Code, point name, interline SCAC code for non-direct points, and terminal code. This file is processed via CIS Maintenance to build a file called TERMZIP.INX, which is the location index the system will subsequently use to look up the terminal code and run number when shipments are costed.
To manage the points list, various overlay files may be built and maintained using items found under Service Points when in CIS Profile Maintenance:
Local index provides access to the index itself for editing. Edits here should generally be done to make immediate corrections for problems that are also being corrected in the carrier points list for the future.
Terminal service exceptions are for locations served by multiple terminals.
City consolidations are for combining areas under one P&D run number, when runs are auto-numbered for loading P&D performance from actual driver trip data.
SCAC conversions are for carrier codes in the points list representing cartage agents, rather than interline carriers, which must be converted to a cartage agreement number for cost calculation.
P&D run overrides are for inserting P&D run numbers based on ZIP code and postal code.
